Introduction

Adol is a predominantly female community. Most of the men of Adol left the village in order to protect those remaining behind. Generally speaking, in South Sudan, men are usually the only ones attacked during territorial conflict and clashes between opposing communities for access to water. The women left behind were without basic life needs and trying their best to care for their children and each other. Adol is a village we often reference when asked about our most exceptional success stories. We drilled a borehole for them in 2012 and it has since been used as a platform for growth in all other areas of life, particularly when it comes to their gardens, which have been developed and monitored in unprecedented ways.

Thanks to their newfound source of water, the community has developed flourishing gardens. These crops provide the community with a self-generated and sustainable source of fresh greens, which bolster and improve the village’s health. The more the community can grow and the more diverse their crops become, the more their health will improve.

Our children are now able to go to school (because of the water well).  They are learning to read and write.  We want to learn too. - Mary from Adol

The women of Adol have expanded their community founded in the principle of supporting one another and working as a unit; continually coming together to collectively overcome any challenges.

IMPACT

Supporting the strong women of Adol.

Starting with clean water.

Drilled a clean water well providing water to the community

After watching the community flourish, we implemented an agriculture system.

The purchase of an ox plough will enable the land to be farmed in addition to the gardens.
