Introduction

The Kibera Kids

Kibera, located in Nairobi, is one of the largest slums in the world. Although it’s only 2.5 square kilometres (roughly the size of Central Park), Kibera has an estimated population of over a million people. The slum grew from the British Colonial government’s use of severe racial segregation, labor exploitation, and political repression over a century ago. Today, it is a target of slum tourism—a growing business that exploits poverty and dehumanizes the families that live there.

Only 20% of the shacks have electricity and almost none have toilets. Until recently, the residents drank water contaminated with typhoid and cholera.

Growing up here, children quickly learn that it is unrealistic to imagine being afforded any education in this realm.

And that becomes a downward spiral for those children, and for the entire community. And that is where we come in.

This year we connected with local families and have now enrolled 50 children in school full-time.

We pay for their school fees, uniforms, and nutritional needs. Fifty children who are learning not just the basics but skills that will help them improve living conditions for their entire families. And every child needs a nutritious diet in order to learn, so we provide for their nutritional needs as well as school uniforms.

We believe in walking beside our partners when we create initiatives like this one, so we can adjust where necessary. We work with their families to help improve conditions at home, and to provide support when school is closed. We work closely with the families to carry the education through the household, and are working to establish a loaning program to alleviate every household from the grips of poverty.

Every child in our program works hard to keep their grades high, they are engaged in learning and they are dreaming about a new future. One in which there are no slums like Kibera. It’s the world we all dream of.

We would like to send even more of the Kibera Kids to school. It only costs $600 to provide all the school fees, uniforms, school supplies and a daily nutritional meal for one child for a full year.

That’s $50 a month, to change a child’s life. And the lives of those around them.
